Did you know 95% of commercial protein powders have toxic ingredients? that could be slowly inflaming your body and depleting your cellular nutritional stores.
In 2010, Consumer Reports tested samples of 15 protein powders and shakes for arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury.
They found that these protein powders contained detectable levels of cadmium, arsenic, lead or mercury. The three most toxic brands contained levels of heavy metal toxicity above the safe allowable limits proposed by U.S. Pharmacopeia. The results showed that levels in three products were of great concern because they exceeded the daily exposure limits proposed by USP for arsenic, cadmium or lead.
Cadmium exposure is especially dangerous because it accumulates in and can damage the kidneys, the same organs that can be damaged by excessive protein consumption. It can take 20 years for the body to eliminate even half the cadmium absorbed today.
“This (Cadmium) is a highly toxic metal, and while there are some cases where decisions have to be weighed against relative risks, accepting that you have to be exposed to any cadmium at all in your protein drink after your workout is definitely not one of them.” says Michael Harbut, M.D., director of the Environmental Cancer Initiative at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Royal Oak, Mich.
Soy Protein
Soy protein isolate is another scary ingredients in most protein powders. It should be avoided for a lot of reasons. Soy also contains phytic acid that leeches calcium and other vital minerals from your body. Soy has enzyme inhibitors that turn off natural enzymes needed to perform critical cell functions.
Additionally, one of the worst problems with soy comes from the fact that 90 to 95 percent of soybeans grown in the US are genetically modified (GM), and these are used to create soy protein isolate.
Whey Protein Isolate
A very large number of whey protein isolates start from ultra-pasteurized conventional milk and are then exposed to acid processing, stripping alkalinizing minerals, naturally occurring vitamins and lipids. Most whey protein powder today is from cows who are given the growth hormone rBGH which has been linked to different diseases, including cancer.
This is why you should try gelatin instead
You should be replacing your regular protein powder with this pure and natural protein source that will also give you so many other health benefits. Gelatin is loaded with protein. It contains 6 grams of protein per tablespoon which makes it a perfect way to add more protein to your diet. It does not include a complete protein, but it is a significant source of many of the amino acids you need in your diet. It helps the body fully utilize the complete proteins that are taken in.
Two specific amino acids in gelatin, glycine and proline, are what you need to build muscle, repair tissue and reduce inflammation. Make sure to get gelatin from grass-fed animals as it is a much healthier than regular gelatin.
Just add one tablespoon gelatin to any smoothie. Here are two brands of gelatin I recommend: Vital Proteins Collagen Protein100% Pure Gelatin and Great Lakes Kosher Gelatin.
