Edamame was first documented in 1275, when a Japanese monk, Nichiren wrote a note thanking a parishioner for his gift of “edamame” left at the temple.

Edamame are immature soy bean pods that are harvested before the pod hardens.

In 2008, the first soybeans were grown in Europe to be sold commercially. Edamame where first marketed as an alternative protein and its popularity has since grown annually.

Edamame are said to be “a powerhouse of nutrition”. I think you may disagree once you can get past all the hype. Let’s face the facts about this soy bean.

  • Soy is higher in phytoestrogen than any other food. Phytoestrogens are plant based estrogen that mimic the estrogen in our body. Consuming high amounts of phytoestrogen, is the leading cause of breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, infertility and low libido.
  • Phytlates found in soy block mineral absorption. Scientists agree that diets high in phytates contribute to mineral deficiencies in third world countries.
  • Soy is also the king of cell Goitrogens (thyroid suppressors). Soy isoflavones can damage thyroid function. In the U.S.A., thyroid problems are pandemic, especially in women.
  • Reproductive health, researchers believe that exposure to phytoestrogen could have impacts on fertility. Human females as a fetus, infant, child, and adolescent reproductive systems are at risk.
