DIY Peppermint Shower Soothers To Fight Against Colds and Flu

It’s hard to stay healthy this time of year. We all try to eat right, exercise and take our supplements but sometimes we still catch a nasty bug. With all the responsibilities we have these days, we can’t just stay in bed and nurture ourselves back to health. I make shower soothes like these (in bulk) and keep them on hand for such mornings.

DIY Peppermint Shower Soothers

Ingredients:
1 cup of baking soda
2 tbsp of salt
3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
1 drop of peppermint essential oil
1/3 cup of lemon juice
Water as needed
Mini muffin cup liners
Mini muffin tin
Or
Cookie cutters/silicone molds/cookie sheet

Directions:
1.) Using a glass mixing bowl, stir baking soda and salt with a fork.

2.) Add the lemon juice a little at a time. It will get fizzy when the acid reacts with the baking soda, keep stirring.

3.) Add water a few tablespoons-full at a time until it looks moist and crumbly and will clump together.

4.) Line your muffin tin with cupcake liners or silicon molds. If using a cookie sheet, grease it first so your dough doesn’t stick. I use coconut or almond oil.

5.) Roll the dough in your hands to make a 2 inch round ball, then add the ball of dough to your muffin cup or cookie sheet. If you are using the cookie sheet, you have many shape options with cookie cutters and silicon molds. Amazon sells many fun shapes.

6.) Bake them for 10-20 minutes at 350 degrees. They will look a little bit like cookies when they are done baking.

7.) Gently remove them from the muffin tin and liner and place them on a plate to cool.

8.) While they’re cooling, add 1 drop of Peppermint oil and 3 drops of Eucalyptus oil to each shower soother.

9.) Leave them out overnight to cool and harden, uncovered.

Storing soothers:
Place the dried shower soothers in a glass Mason jar with a tin cover. The longer they are in the jar, the more beneficial they’ll become.

If they are crumbly use a fork and turn them into a powder. Place 2 tbsp into a little dish to sit in your steamy shower.

How to Use a Shower Soother:
To use a shower soother, turn on your shower to the desired temperature and place the soother out of the direct spray of the water, on the shower floor. The steam will create a fragrant vapor that will promote feelings of clear airways.
Why do these soothers work:
The tiny volatile molecules of healing plants are captured through distillation, creating an essential oil. The shower steam releases these molecules from the soother and are inhaled and pass through the sinus membranes, entering the bloodstream.

Peppermint essential oil is used in this case to promote healthy respiratory function. The main chemical components of Eucalyptus oil makes it an ideal oil to promote feelings of clear breathing and open airways.
